Responsibilities

The Mechanical Engineer (Mechanisms) will:

 

  • Design and develop mechanisms and electromechanical assemblies for spaceflight systems.
  • Generate and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation in accordance with engineering standards and program requirements.
  • Perform engineering analyses including hand calculations, tolerance analyses, and preliminary structural and mechanism performance assessments.
  • Develop and execute verification activities, including functional, environmental, and life-cycle testing of mechanism hardware.
  • Support hardware procurement, manufacturing, assembly, integration, troubleshooting, and delivery.
  • Collaborate with systems, structures, avionics, software, manufacturing, and test teams to integrate mechanism hardware into flight systems.
  • Participate in requirements development, design reviews, and verification planning activities.
  • Support customer presentations, technical reviews, and program milestones.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

 

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline from an accredited institution, plus zero (0) to five (5) years of experience. 
  • Knowledge of mechanical system, mechanism, and electromechanical assembly design gained through academic, internship, project, or professional experience.
  • Experience using CAD modeling software (Creo, NX, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
  • Knowledge of Windchill or other PLM tools.
  • Experience creating engineering drawings, bills of materials, work orders, assembly procedures, and test plans through academic, internship, project, or professional experience.
  • Knowledge of mechanism design principles and machine elements, including motion-control systems, actuators, gears, bearings, and structural interfaces.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electromechanical system requirements, verification methods, and hardware testing.
  • Ability to work effectively on multidisciplinary engineering teams with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferences:

  • Experience with spaceflight systems.
  • Experience with environmental testing, including vibration, thermal-vacuum, shock, or life-cycle testing.
  • Experience with engineering analysis tools or motion simulation software.
  • Experience using FEA modeling software (Ansys, Simcenter, etc.).
  • Master's degree in engineering.

Essential Requirements 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Applicant selected may be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • Work may involve sitting for extended periods.
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lb.
  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.
  • Generally, an office environment but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.)
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
